STRAWS CONSULTATION SUBMISSION
The FPA has made its submission to Defra for the consultation on straws and stirrers.
In summary, the FPA does not support the ban as we do not believe targeting individual packaging types in this way will lead to a significant reduction in land or marine litter as one type of litter is likely to be replaced with another and that it is merely a sticking plaster that does not address the total issue. Pubs, bars and restaurants should be able to supply guests with disabilities or limited mobility with flexible plastic straws. We believed the date announced in the budget of April 2022 for the introduction of a plastics tax to facilitate behaviour change and product development establishes a firm precedent for all proposed actions. There should be for an exemption for school milk cartons and a new code of practice for the hospitality sector with regard to the dispensation of items such as straws, regardless of material, which should only be provided when requested.
FPA JOINS FOODWASTE COALITION
The FPA has signed up to the Food Waste Coalition, organised by the BBIA, which is calling on the Government to fast-track universal domestic food waste collections.
The Food Waste Coalition has brought together more than 40 companies, organisations and local authorities, including Iceland, Ecosurety, Greenpeace and more, to demand the inclusion of mandatory food waste collections in the upcoming Resources and Waste Strategy.
