The FPA has been active in opposing the proposal of the Scottish Government to implement a deposit return scheme on drinks containers. Such schemes require retailers to take back all containers irrespective of whether the original drink is sold by them or not. The Scottish Environment Cabinet Secretary, Richard Lochhead is now urging the UK Government to implement this scheme nationally. We oppose a DRS because:
1) It will result in higher charges to consumers
2) It will impose very high administrative and financial burdens on foodservice operators
3) It will result in logistical issues particularly for smaller operators, having to store returned containers
4) High quality used packaging will be revived from kerbside collection and so will result in a revenue loss to Local Authorities
The FPA has been in discussions with the major foodservice operators and it is hoped to fight these proposals together.
