FPA RE SHUFFLE COMMENT

FPA RE SHUFFLE COMMENT

NEWS RELEASE

The FPA has submitted the following comment to Packaging News, regarding to the current cabinet re-shuffle, following Theresa May’s appointment as Prime Minister:

“It’s disappointing to see yet another change at the top of Defra. We need to see longer-term leadership of this hugely important department bearing in mind the manifesto commitment for a 25 year plan for the environment. Along with congratulations to Mrs Leadsum must be a plea for her to consider the interests of business in her Department’s policy proposals particularly avoiding added costs and red tape. A Secretary of State at Defra with a strong interest in business would be a very positive development. With the dismantling of DECC, will Defra be given responsibility for delivering the obligation of the Climate Change Act to reduce UK’s carbon emissions by 80% from the 1990 baseline? If this were to be the case, then will Mrs Leadsum’s business background help to ensure the obligation is achieved without placing huge burdens on business? At the time of writing this we don’t know the make-up of Ministerial positions at Defra. We hope Rory Stewart remains in position. It would be a great pity if we were to lose him.”
