FPA WELCOMES EAC REPORT’S CALL FOR FUND TO INCREASE RECYCLING COLLECTION

After calling for some time for the reform of the mechanism used to meet businesses’ responsibility for packaging, the Foodservice Packaging Association (FPA) welcomes the Environmental Audit Committee’s (EAC) report’s call for an additional fund that will increase recycling collections, strengthen communication to the public, improve the recyclability of packaging and increase the demand for recycled content.

Martin Kersh, Executive Director of the FPA said “We represent the entire foodservice packaging industry.  Our proposed reforms, including changes to the current compliance system (the PRN (Packaging Recovery Note) system), sees businesses paying into a central fund to increase packaging recycling across the UK. These reforms would also reward recyclability and recycled content.  PRN’s apply to all packaging and our proposed reform is receiving support from across the industry supply chain.”

“The fund would be created through the suggested reforms of the PRN system and represent a significant step forward for packaging recycling. Money raised would be used in a transparent manner, as proposed in the report, to fund better infrastructures for on-the-go recycling, stronger communications, and vital design and innovation progress. Also in line with the EAC report more businesses will be brought into the scheme.”

The FPA is pleased that the EAC has acknowledged, and is receptive to, the suggestions put forward by our industry. By listening to the united voices of industry, the future of packaging can be one of sustainability and innovation and, in turn, increased recycling rates and reduced litter.
