Together with Jane Bevis, Chair of OPRL, Martin co-chaired the Big Debate at the Packaging Innovations Olympia trade show on Wednesday 1 December
The debate looked at the packaging reforms, with the panel including grocery retailers and local government and the audience consisting of packaging professionals and others. It became clear during the course of the debate nearly all attending were not convinced the new legislation, individually and collectively, will achieve anything close to the improvements in recycling (amount and quality) the government expects. Given the costs involved, this clearly is very disappointing with morale and optimism very low, even before we’ve received the government’s response to the consultations.
It was agreed that all parties - producers, government (national and local), waste management and the public will have to collaborate intensively to achieve the improvements we need from these interventions. All sides of the debate felt the interventions will fall short.
Our thanks to Easy Fairs for getting the Packaging Innovations Show back on the road.
